Wisdom from a Wordsmith – Episode 23

Dawn Kinzer’s books are a new discovery for me. I just finished reading my first book written by her, and I loved it — if anything, I wanted the story to go on! You can be sure I have more of Dawn’s novels on my Kindle, just waiting for me to find the time to sit down and read for pure enjoyment!

Dawn is in several of my favorite writing groups on Facebook, and I look forward to learning more about her and her writing in the future.

Welcome to Wisdom from a Wordsmith, Dawn!

What aspects of your childhood created your love for writing?

I grew up in a small Wisconsin town with a population of about five hundred people, and I spent every Saturday morning at the library created in a backroom at our local fire department.

At an early age, I relied on my imagination to entertain myself. A stage, built in the center of town for performances during the town’s yearly celebration, became another playground where a friend and I dressed up and acted out our own plays. I’m not sure what the locals thought, but we were oblivious to anyone else. Writing allows me to continue creating my own worlds, characters, and adventures.

What is something unique about you that your readers might not know?

I enjoy martial arts. Years ago, I trained five to six days a week in Tae Kwon Do. Life stepped in, and I had to give up that practice, but there are times when I’d like to return and rebuild what skills I could at this age.

Tell us about your latest project.

My historical romance, With a Trusting Heart, was released in February 2022. This story was inspired by events that took place at the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Expo—Seattle’s first world’s fair.

The exposition is taking place in Seattle with participants from all over the world when Lizzie Clark accepts a position at an orphanage in the city. After suffering heartbreak and loss, she is determined to make a life for herself independently.

Jack Butler’s mother abandoned their family when he was a young boy. Loyalty to his father costs him fulfilling his own aspirations, so Jack strives to take their family farm in a new direction.

A newborn is left at the orphanage with a note asking Lizzie to take care of him. Why did the woman abandon her child? And why is Jack, a handsome local farmer so interested in helping Lizzie search for the infant’s mother?

When shocking revelations disrupt their plans, Lizzie and Jack are faced with life-changing decisions.

What are your greatest hopes as an author?

I truly desire for readers to become lost in my stories and the characters’ lives and then come to the last page feeling challenged, encouraged, and inspired in their own journeys.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Avoid believing that you only have a small window of opportunity. A successful writing career is not defined by a person’s age, nor does it need to be limited.

Writing is work. Publishing is difficult. There are times when we all have to take criticism—some legitimate and some not so fair. During those times, take a deep breath, talk to fellow writers who understand, and pray.

I encourage you to not get consumed with the goal of being published. Work hard, but also trust God’s plan and enjoy the journey, regardless of publication. Over the years, other writers have become close friends, and they’ve greatly enriched my life.

That is excellent advice, Dawn! One of the best things about my own authoring journey has been building relationships with other writers. So many have been supportive and welcoming! And most importantly, trusting God to use our writing abilities for His glory and knowing there is no better place than being in the center of His will is crucial to true success as an author!
