A Morning at Character Cafe with Luella Linley

a well-dressed older woman in front of a cafe with a cartoon character Amy

Good morning! So glad you stopped by Character Cafe. Gorgeous coat and scarf, by the way! I’m the cartoon version of Amy Walsh.

My name is Louise Brooker, actually, but I’m best known as Luella Linley. It’s my pen name, you see. My Regency novels are internationally famous, and I have fans the world over who think I’m marvelous.

Oh my goodness! I don’t know how I didn’t recognize you. I’ve read so many of your books. Squee! I can’t believe I’m in the presence of Luella Linley!!!

Thank you. You’re so kind. But at home, I’m just Louise, wife of Russell, mother of Megan, Chloe and Pete. My children are all independent adults now, but I’m not sure independence has helped them get on with the important business in life. Finding a life partner. Bless them. Megan is too focused on work, Chloe is all I-don’t-need-a-man, and Pete goes through relationships like water – his problem is obvious. He keeps choosing models, when he’d be far better off looking for a girl who is more substance and less glamour.

I’m sure they will eventually settle down and find the significant other God has planned for each of them. Don’t you think?

I would hope so. Believe me, I try to keep my focus on my writing and leave my kids to get their own lives sorted – but honestly, sometimes, that’s just impossible. Take Megan. She’s working for a slime-ball boss who is inappropriate, and what she needs is a boyfriend who can circle by and rattle this man’s cage. I’m looking into it.

Well, if you can’t find anyone, we can send my husband and son to her place of employment. My husband is a police officer and at six foot four inches, he is very intimidating. My son is almost as tall, and he works out regularly. They could teach that slime-ball a thing or two.

Thanks, but I’m hoping to find someone who might take a fancy to Megan. You know it’s my greatest desire for my kids to get married and have grandchildren. But so help me, they seem to have other priorities. It’s frustrating.

[Laughs] I think I’m getting the picture. Changing the subject, do you have a theme verse?

I sure do! It’s Proverbs 18:22 “The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the LORD.”

[Laughs again.] You are too funny, Luella. I mean Louise. Can I get you a hot drink? Other customers are starting to file in.

I’m partial to peppermint tea with honey, but sometimes switch out to ginger and lemon – still with honey.

Ooo! We just purchased a new type of tea, that’s a combination of both. I haven’t tried it, but I’ve heard it’s a comforting tea. Great for the stomach, and for colds. Very calming. https://www.amazon.com/CELEBRATION-HERBALS-Ginger-Peppermint-Organic/dp/B000HB9TNQ/

I could use something to calming. I’ll try it.

What is a breakfast pastry or dish that represents you, your region, or a theme in the novel in which you are a character?

Breakfast is Vegemite on toast. I’m Australian. There isn’t any other kind of breakfast, despite all of the uncomplimentary things that various international visitors have to say about our staple. And since we’re on the topic, you can’t do better for lunch than pop into the Otto’s Baker at Hahndorf and get an Aussie meat pie with sauce (That’s ketchup for all you people on the other side of the world).

We don’t have Vegemite. I will add that to my shopping list. And I’ve heard great things about Otto’s. We do have an Australian breakfast dish though. How about some egg and bacon pie? https://www.bestrecipes.com.au/recipes/egg-bacon-pie-recipe-7/1865c8ym

Sounds delish.

Readers, you are going to get a kick out of the lengths Luella goes to secure happily-ever-afters for her children.

Regency romance author, Luella Linley, arranges her characters’ lives, making sure that they weather all storms and live happily-ever-after. Her characters are putty in her hands, but her 21st Century adult children are not so easily organized. When her daughter, Megan, asks for support with an inappropriate situation at work, Luella decides Megan should get a boyfriend to intimidate her boss. The cop who just pulled Luella over for speeding is a likely candidate.Cam Fletcher is expecting to be interviewed by a famous author. Instead of sharing insights into his job working in the police force, he is sharing a meal with the famous author and her daughter, Megan. When left alone with Megan, Cam wonders when the interview will begin. The parents’ extended absence gives him a clue, which Megan confirms. Luella Linley is playing matchmaker, but is he willing to play the game?
